Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Tips for the New Player

Tips for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Loot...EVERYTHING!

When starting out, coin will be in short supply. You can boost your money game by looting everything you come across. You can then sell it to shopkeepers or break it down for use in making your own armors, potions, etc. Now would also be a good time to mention that, in my experience, different shopkeepers will pay you more for things that they tend to sell themselves. Example being an armor smith will pay more for armor pieces than say, the general store. Some shops won't even buy certain things from you. Be sure to gather all the herbs you come across as well, you can save a bundle when you are making your potions and don't have to buy the more expensive ones from a herbalist. Furthermore most potions will auto replenish when you meditate for at least 1 hour, but they do require any kind of "strong alcohol" to be in your inventory at the time, so make sure you collect any alcohol you find.

Dodge, Dodge, Dodge!!!

The combat can be very challenging when you are still at lower levels, until you get the hang of it. You need to make sure you are always dodging or parrying attacks, or you will constantly find yourself staring at the game over screen. Stick and run seems to be the best tactic, although, some enemies with swords or other smaller weapons can be parried; if you are facing either a monster or someone with a huge club or great-axe (etc.) you will definitely want to dodge. If you try to parry attacks from heavy weapons or monster strikes, you will become staggered and unable to act for a short while. Although it seems you can break a staggered state prematurely by pressing (B) on an Xbox controller (O) on Playstation.

Too rough still??

Do some side quests. You can get more money to buy or craft better gear, experience to level up and become more powerful. There is almost always a couple Witcher contracts that are around your level, so make sure to complete them. Use potions and blade oils on the appropriate monsters, they can really be helpful and might just give you the little edge you need to survive an encounter; also make use of the nearest weapon and armor enhancement stations, however not all of these are readily available, some require you to save a merchant or something before that village will have this luxury. Make heavy use of the places of power for your signs, making sure to get the boost that the creature you are facing is weak against.

Tired of questing?

If you get tired of questing, run around to the question marks on your map and explore. Keep in mind, not all the awesome POI's are marked. I have ran into plenty of ruins and caves that had good treasure and awesome vistas that were not marked on the map, so don't be afraid to go off of the well trodden path and look around.

With a little time and practice, you will be a monster slaying prodigy, I'm sure. Hopefully these tips will help you along your first few hours!
You will be kicking the butt of baddies soon!
